Have you ever wondered why Jari Litmanen wore number 37 when he joined Liverpool during the 2001-02 season?
Did you think that perhaps it was because the two digits added up to ten, a number he had often worn? Well, you’re kind of right.
In a new video with Classic Football Shirts, the Finn explains how he was also paying homage to Liverpool greats.
“I’ve always played with the number 10,” he said, “the national team, Ajax, Barcelona.
“I came first of January 2001 to Liverpool, there were only a few numbers left. There was something like number 4, number 5, I had nothing with those numbers, 24 or something like that, there were no numbers for me.
“First, I wanted to have number 77 because Kevin Keegan played with number 7 and Kenny Dalglish played with number 7 but it was too big a number for that time. Maybe these days it would be a different story!
“The highest number in the Premier League at that time was 38 or something like that, so then I thought of 37 – three plus seven is ten, plus the number 7 of Kenny and Kevin is there too.”
